Unifying Agronomic and Irrigation Data into One View

Client: Phytech/ Agritech
Role: Design lead
Agency: Brio Interaction Design
Year: 2024

Goal: Simplify complexity and enhance decision-making by combining agronomic data (tree status, soil condition, fruit quality, etc.) and irrigation planning (across multiple valves) into a single, unified interface -one map and one list - instead of separate systems.

User research

Through interviews with agronomists and irrigation planners, we explored how they currently make irrigation decisions. Fieldwork revealed the need for a unified view that takes into account both the technical irrigation plans and the actual field conditions.

Main issues
  • Multi-plot irrigation: Valves often irrigate multiple plots, complicating planning.

  • Inconsistent conditions: Each plot may have different field conditions, even under the same valve.

  • Lack of integration: No way to combine maps and lists across agronomy and irrigation.

  • Disconnected decision-making: Agronomists and planners made decisions separately.

  • Visual silos: Separation between disciplines led to inefficiencies.

UX Decisions
  • Combined map views: Displaying both irrigation zones and agronomic statuses in a single interface.

  • Layer toggling: Allowing users to overlay or switch between data types.

  • Contextual linking: Created links between valves and affected plots.

UI Decisions
  • Unified visuals: Harmonized color schemes and icons for both data types.

  • Dual legends: Differentiating between agronomic and irrigation information.

  • List-map hybrid view: Seamless transition from overview to plot-level detail.

  • Grouped visuals: Easier comparison of irrigation and agronomic information side by side.
