Irrigation Event Prediction
Client: Phytech/ Agritech
Role: Design lead
Agency: Brio Interaction Design
Year: 2024
Goal: Create a clear and intuitive way to present system-generated irrigation recommendations, and allow users to easily act on them while maintaining flexibility.
User research
We observed how users currently plan irrigation events and how they interact with system predictions. Initially, the system only offered general recommendations that weren’t based on plot-specific data, which made them less relevant.
Main issues
Clear differentiation: Introducing a new type of event - recommended - required visual and functional separation from planned and actual events.
Make it actionable: The recommendation feature didn’t exist before. We wanted it to feel easy to trust and act on.
Holistic planning: Needed more than one recommendation per valve - a weekly view across all valves and zones.
Data silos: Prediction tools weren’t integrated into the daily workflow, reducing trust and impact.
UX Decisions
New event type design: Designed a new visual representation for suggested events.
Streamlined workflow: Made recommendations editable and directly actionable.
Tool integration: Integrated prediction layers into agronomic decision tools.
UI Decisions
Recommendation styling: Introduced a dashed line in brand colors to indicate recommendations.
Contextual visuals: Embedded soil moisture graphs next to recommended events.
Unified interaction model: Created consistent interactions across all event types.
